Fraud Abroad
Pack your wallet like you pack your luggage. Don’t wait until the last minute! Set up travel notifications to make sure your international transactions go through. Many financial institutions, Rogue included, block “unusual” transactions to protect their members from fraud.
For example, we’d be suspicious if you’re an Ashland local that visits Rogue Valley Roasting Company every Saturday, and then one weekend, there’s a random transaction attempted in Rome. With a travel note, we’d know that transaction at Antico Caffè Greco is just your weekly coffee date, moved to Rome’s oldest café while you’re on vacation.
To set up a travel note in Online or Mobile Banking, select “Card Controls” (under “More” in Mobile Banking) and then choose “Manage Travel Plans.” Then select “Add Travel Plan,” enter the countries you’re visiting, when you’re going and submit the form. You can also give us a call at 800.856.7328 or stop by your local branch to set up a travel note. We just ask you notify us two or more business days in advance.
If we notice anything out of the ordinary, we’ll contact you to verify the transaction before blocking the card. Ask your cell provider about short-term international service plans or purchase a SIM card while you’re out of the country to ensure that you’ll receive texts/calls from us about unusual or suspicious account activity.
It’s a good idea to bring multiple forms of payment when you travel abroad. Your Rogue Visa® debit and credit card(s) will work as usual, provided you’ve submitted a travel note. Keep in mind that Rogue Visa® debit and credit card(s) have a 1% conversion fee for international use; you’ll see it posted to your account as a separate transaction. To avoid conversion fees, you can also order foreign currency at your local branch. It’s a good idea to have some local cash on hand in case things go awry.
A lost purse, stolen wallet or card-eating ATM can derail vacation plans, but we’re here to help. If you find yourself without your card, freeze it as soon as possible. To do so in Mobile Banking, log in and select “More” then “Card Controls.” From there, toggle the “On/Off” switch below your card. If you have multiple cards, use the left and right arrows to navigate between them. This will prevent any further transactions from occurring. You can also give us a call at 800.856.7328 anytime.
At Rogue Credit Union, we take the safety and security of our members’ accounts very seriously. If you have any questions or suspect fraudulent activity on your account(s), we’re here to help. Give us a call at 800.856.7328, chat with us online or stop by your local branch.
