Lessons That Last

This fall, I’ve been thinking a lot about the teachers who shape our lives, not just the ones in the classrooms, but anyone who can help us learn something that stays with us.

When I was in 7th grade, Apple donated 30 brand-new Macintosh computers to my junior high. It was a big deal! Every student in my grade was enrolled in our first-ever computer class with Mr. Wood. At first, I was only mildly interested. But that changed the moment I sat in Mr. Wood’s classroom. His passion was contagious. He wasn’t just teaching us how to use computers. He was showing us what it could mean for our future to understand cutting-edge technology. That excitement rubbed off on me quickly.

By the end of the semester, I had joined the early morning computer club and signed up for an optional after-school computer class. I started applying what I was learning right away and even helped produce our school’s first digitally created newsletter. I loved every bit of it. But more than anything, I loved learning from Mr. Wood. His energy and dedication were a big part of why I pursued a successful career in Information Technology.

Great teachers like Mr. Wood have a way of helping us see things differently. They remind us that learning isn’t just about textbooks or tests. It’s about preparation, perseverance and the kind of insight that sticks with us long after the final bell rings.

That same spirit of lifelong learning applies to managing our finances. Fortunately, life’s “exams” are open-book, and we can take notes along the way. People sometimes ask me where to go to learn more about financial well-being. One place to start is our Dollars and $ense blog. It’s packed with helpful tips about budgeting, building credit and planning, so you can feel confident and in control of your finances. You can check it out here.

I am incredibly grateful to the people who have helped me learn over the years. And at the end of the day, we’re all still learning. Whether you’re just starting out or ready to retire, the great thing is that you’re not alone. So, let’s keep learning and sharing our passions with others.

You can always reach out to us for support. Send us a chat, call 800.856.7328 or visit your local branch. We’re happy to help.
